“RULES
OF THE LEEDS ASSOCIATION OF ENGINEERS”
Presidents and Vice Presidents of
the Association 1865 to 2004.
Secretaries of the Association
Journal Editors of the Association
Chairman and Vice-Chairman of Annual
Dinner 1866 to 2004
Once again we offer our
sincere apologies for the fact that this report and journal is overdue, and
covers some four years. There are some changes to the Report and Journal from
previous issues. The most obvious to be noted will be binding and the lack of
advertising that has financed previous issues. There are a reduced number of
engineering companies in the area who are willing to contribute to advertising
in a journal where circulation and “pay back” is very low. It is much
appreciated that there are companies still able and willing to support the
Association through attending the annual Dinner, and sponsoring the Golf day.
It is however the same small group who regularly contribute, and the Council
felt we should step back as far as the journal is concerned, and that the
Association fully finance this issue.
The whole is now computerised
so that reproduction in future will be much easier and additions will not need
the previous type setting and use of a skilled printer to produce a booklet. We
discussed the format we should offer, including omitting the long lists of
Presidents, Chairmen and Speakers at the annual Dinner, and the list of Members
and Officers. This would have reduced the number of pages by over half. We felt
that these lists are an important part of this publication, and they have been
retained. We also discussed the size of the print and booklet size, and decided
that we should avoid very small print of previous years and A5 should remain
the size of page. We have also discussed the use of colour in the few
photographs we have reproduced. All the “new” information can be found in the
front part of this issue and the long lists of “history” in the back part. We
hope you will enjoy reading this edition.
Continuing with the subject
of information, the Association has this year created a web site, controlled by
Steve Hall. Steve has spent many hours setting up and producing the site and
has reported a number of “hits”. The information contained in the site is
gradually increasing, and hopefully will publicise the Association to a wider and
younger audience. The best result would be an increase in membership. If you
can, take a look at the site on www.leeds-engineers.org.uk , your
comments would be appreciated.
We have had many changes within
the Association during the past few years.
Brian Clarkson resigned from
his posts as Treasurer and Trustee at the end of the 2001 session. He had been
Treasurer for some 21 years and retains his
Membership. The Council expressed regret at
his decision, his work for the Association is much appreciated. Michael
Armstrong took on the role of treasurer and John Bentley was elected as Trustee
in Brian’s place.
Bill Shelton had been asking
to retire from his duties as Honorary Secretary for some time. Eventually at
the end of the 2001 session he insisted on retiring, and the Council
regrettably accepted his resignation. Bill had been Honorary Secretary for 21 years. Not surprisingly we had difficulty in
finding someone willing to take on the job that Bill had done so well for so
long.
Eventually after much debate
and twisting of arms the appointment was broken down as follows.
Current Account for day to
day running of the Association was transferred to the Treasurer’s duties.
Membership Secretary, Malcolm
Murray, is now responsible for collecting subscriptions, and maintaining the
members list. This continues in addition to being President 2003/5.
Minutes of normal visits and
meetings would not be formally taken. (We had reduced this task some time ago
from a detailed account to brief notes.) Council and AGM. minutes were to be
maintained by Ian Blakeley, with title of Minute Secretary.
The bi-monthly Circular was
to be produced by Steve Bell. Steve has since had to resign owing to a change
of his employment. Mike Bate and Thorite Ltd. had been printing and posting the
Circular and keeping the Membership list for some time and had found it
increasingly difficult to devote sufficient time to continue. Malcolm Murray
took on the writing, printing and postage of the circular. Many thanks To Mike
and his team at Thorite for their work.
Gordon Toulson suggested that all Correspondence should go to
one address, and be distributed to the relevant person from there. Please
address all correspondence to Gordon, who is also acting as Recruitment
Secretary.
The above is basically a breakdown of the tasks that Bill as
Honorary Secretary had performed over the years. In recognition of his long
service and to show the gratitude of the Association,
Bill was presented with a cut glass inscribed bowl at the first Council meeting
of session 2001/2. Council has also made Bill a Life Honorary Member.
Barrie Yates took over the
role of Programme Secretary from Roger Letch. Both of these Gentlemen did this
during their time as President.
Bill Shelton has continued as
Dinner Secretary, following on from Steve Hazeldine. Steve had been Dinner Secretary for a considerable time
Many thanks to Steve for organising so many successful Dinners.
John Bentley took
on the task of Journal Editor.
Council
Membership has also changed. Colin Whitley, Tony Mathers, Andrew Czencusz and
John Mulligan have all retired from Council. Colin had been a council member
for over 20 years and had been Vice President and President of the Association.
John Mulligan had also been Vice President and President of the Association.
Roger Letch
completed his term as President, followed by Barrie Yates, and Malcolm Murray.
Bill Shelton was elected Vice President 2003/5.
Despite all the
changes, the Association, apart from a lack of new younger members, remains
strong. Numbers of members and guests attending meetings and visits are higher
than for some time, which reflects well the effort of producing a varied and
interesting programme. The two prestige events of the calendar, Golf and Dinner
remain popular, although we would welcome a larger attendance at the Dinner.
As a mere Southerner, I was both surprised and delighted to be asked to become the President of this Association. I am aware of the longevity and historical background, as Leeds is one of the oldest Engineering Associations in the country.
Having served on the Council, and assisted in the organising of some of
the events, I looked forward to trying to “serve my time” as President in the
best possible way.
My aim has been to move the
“ethos” of the society forward into the twenty first century, without
compromising the great traditions. In this respect, with responsibility for
organising the programmes, I tried to present the events in a more light
hearted way, as a means of grabbing peoples attention. This has seemed to work,
as we always have a good number turning up.
Although we are a men’s group we have tried to make the Ladies evenings pleasant social events, and the idea of sharing a meal has been welcomed by most of you. It is intended to have more social events in future.
I really enjoyed representing you all at the many formal events run by our brother organisations, and last year I renewed our association with the York Association, and so our network of like minded friends grows.
Recently we have seen the growth of Leeds as a commercial centre, but at the same time we have seen the demise of the engineering and to some extent the manufacturing sector. This means inevitably that we have less possible firms to visit, and less chance of involving young engineers in our society.
Therefore as a parting
thought, I ask you all to try to recruit new members to keep alive the
association, and to put forward your thoughts and ideas to the Council, so that we can ensure continued success.
May I take this opportunity
to thank all of you who supported me during my presidency.
Barrie J. Yates.

The
Council is saddened by the loss of Members and together with fellow members
extends deepest sympathy to their families and friends.
When
the death or a Member occurs, we ask that fellow Members acquainted with the
deceased inform the President, Secretary or any Council Member as early as
possible. The content of the Obituary Notice is usually obtained in this way.
If we are not informed, our circulars etc. continue to be sent. This can cause
unnecessary grief which we would wish to avoid. Furthermore, if no additional
information is forthcoming, we are obliged to confine the content to the
records of membership on our file.
W D. Ockendon.
Bill joined the Association
in 1951 and was a regular attendee of meetings and the annual dinner. Bill
could be relied upon to join in with questions and comments about most
subjects. Some years ago he volunteered to lecture to us about his life in
engineering. He had so much to say that the meeting extended well past the
normal time, and he suggested that we continue at some future date. Regrettably
he ran out of time again, so we shall not hear the rest of the interesting
tale. Bill was an active member of other organisations in addition to ours and
is sadly missed.

The
Annual Anniversary Dinner continued to be held at the Mansion Hotel, Roundhay
Park, Leeds. The 2004 Dinner will be the last to be held at the Mansion as it
will be converted for other use. In-spite of rising costs we have been able to
offer a value for money evening at a reasonable price. Although numbers
attending the Dinner have been lower than we would perhaps wish, we have been
able to continue with the Dinner, and intend to do so in future. The Allerton,
Nursery Lane, Alwoodley, has been booked for the 2005 Dinner.
The
choice of Menu selectable at the table continued to prove popular. Despite
rising costs, the ticket price has been maintained at a level to encourage
attendance. The 2003 entertainment included a small group to provide background
music prior to the Dinner and during intervals. The Adrian Ingram Trio played
without spoiling conversations, and were appreciated by many guests. We
therefore engaged them again for 2004.
Many
thanks to Stephen Hazeldine for the organisation of the Dinners from 1994 to
2001, and to John Mulligan and Bill Shelton for 2002, and Bill alone for 2003
and 2004.
Michael
Armstrong retired from his long role as Toast Master after the 2002 Dinner.
Mike has carried out the duties of Toast Master since 1984 in a very able and
professional manner, his contribution to the organisation and smooth running of
the Dinner has been of great value to the Association. He has however not
retired into an inactive role, as he is our Treasurer and continues to be a
Trustee of the Association. John Bentley has taken on the role of Toastmaster.
We have continued to extend a warm
welcome to representatives of kindred organisations – Hull, York and Keighley
Associations, the Welding Institute and the IEE. Our President has represented
our Association at their functions.
The Toast to “The Bishops, Clergy and
Ministers of All Denominations” was proposed by:-
In 2000 Eur.Ing. Brian Firth, C.Eng., F.I.E.E., M.I.Mech.E. (IEE)
In
2001 Melvin Barker, Esq. (Keighley Assn.)
In
2002 Prof. R.C. Cockrane, (Leeds Welding
& Joining Soc)
In
2003 M. Laycock, Esq., C. Eng.,
M.I.Mech.E. (Keighley Assn.)
In
2004 Tim Arundel, Esq., (Hull
Association)
The response was
by our Chaplain Rev. Canon Graham Smith.
The Braime trophy
was formally presented by the President at the Dinner to:-
In 2000 J. S. Mulligan, Esq. In
2001 R. Johnson, Esq.
In 2002 K. Gibson, Esq. In
2003 D. McNalus, Esq.
In 2004 C.H. Mathers, Esq.
The Toast to “Our
Guests” was proposed by the President, and the response was by the Lord Mayor
of Leeds except for 2003 when Eur.Ing. Brian Firth responded.
“Prosperity to
the Association” was proposed by the Principal Speaker of the evening, with a
short response by the President, prior to closing the Dinners.
It has been
announced in March 2004, that our Honorary Chaplain, The Rev. Canon Graham
Smith, has by Royal Assent been appointed to be Dean of Norwich Cathedral.
Graham has been
Rector of Leeds and our Chaplain since 1996. He has been a welcome Guest and
Speaker at our Annual Dinner each year, and in turn has warmly welcomed us to,
and conducted the Church service each April. We shall be presenting Graham with
a small token of our appreciation of his term as Chaplain. The Association has
had the services of a Chaplain since formation in 1865, and as far as we are
aware is unique in this appointment.
We congratulate
Graham on his new appointment, and wish him and his family well for the future.
We have held
lectures at the University for the sessions covered in this Journal.
Consequently costs of room hire are low when compared to that charged by Hotels
and other meeting places, and we have not considered that the meetings required
Sponsorship. Our Programme Secretary arranges suitable recompense to Security
staff for their extra time keeping the door open.
Council Meetings
are held at The Corner House Club, Leeds, on the first Thursday of each month
during session time. A small annual charge is made for the use of a Committee
Room.
As reported in our last Journal, the award scheme for young
engineers in its earlier form has been discontinued.
We have explored various schemes to encourage the development
of young engineers and decided that we should support projects run for young
engineers. Barrie Yates reported on the Formula Student Racing Car Project and
the car run by Leeds University. We supported this project in 2000 and 2001
through a small financial gift. The Association did not receive any new members
from this sponsorship. Barrie Yates keeps in regular contact with the
University on a personal basis on this and other subjects.
During 2001 there was a scheme run for Schools titled “F1 Project
in Schools” which was a nation wide project. Each School selected a team of
pupils to design and run model cars within a specification for the competition.
We were delighted to learn that the winner for 2001 was Kettlethorpe High
School. We then presented a cheque to Mr I. Slater of the school at our 136th
Anniversary Dinner.
Since then we have not found, or been informed of, any
suitable schemes for us to sponsor.

As with all “spare time”
clubs we have shown a fall in membership numbers. Although we have a slow
steady influx of new members, a glance at the membership list will confirm that
many of the general membership are retired and have no business address, and
those that have are of advancing years. The Council are continually discussing
ways and means of attracting younger engineers to the Association but in spite
of various promotions we have failed. We are aware that when attending a
meeting for the first time that a younger person will be surrounded by
predominantly well worn faces, and feel out of place. We really need to have a
group of younger people, already known to each other, attending regularly
together. They would be made welcome at any meeting. We have difficulty finding
such a group, especially as there are no more series of Apprentices attending
night school to initially create the bonds of times past. The Council would
readily appreciate any input on this subject.
Qualifications for Membership
are set out below, but please remember that they are for guidance only. They
were formulated some time ago, and nowadays there are many engineers working in
“non engineering” industries and/or with different job titles. The membership
is open to ALL branches of engineering, male and female, we are not an
“academic” society, we are just engineers!
(Loosely extracted from the
“Rules of the Association”)
There is now no practical difference between the benefits obtained from the three grades of membership.
A Full member will not exceed 45 years of age on application, and have been an Employer, Manager, Foreman/woman, Draughtsperson, Supervisor or Technician in engineering for at least three years, except where it is satisfactorily shown that a departure from this rule will further the interests of the Association.
An Honorary member will be an Employer or other person (of any age above 25) connected with engineering and desirous of furthering the objects of the Association.
An Associate member will be a young person, actively engaged in or connected with “engineering”, aged 18 to 25. At, or before, the age of 28 they should transfer to Full Membership.
Life
Honorary Membership is available for a “once only” payment of Ł150.
